Fall 2016 Guest Artist Zeesy Powers
We are very excited to welcome Zeesy Powers as our Fall 2016 Guest Artist.
Zeesy will be working with participants to create a music video for “Watching the Clouds Go By,” which they collaboratively composed and recorded with guest artist Lydia Ainsworth.
Zeesy Powers is an artist working with performance, image and text. She has performed and exhibited at venues including PS 122 (New York), CCA Kitakyushu (Japan), The Power Plant and the Art Gallery of Ontario, and her videos and animations have screened internationally. In summer 2016 she was Artist in Residence at studio XX in Montreal, developing an interactive video installation using the Python programming language. The resulting interactive video piece “An Averaging Mirror” will be featured at Festival HTMlles this November. As Artist in Residence at the Toronto Public Library for 2015 she produced “Children’s Story”, a complex multimedia projection performance with the children of a diverse urban community. In 2014, her first collection of short stories was published by WAAP in Vancouver. Powers has a background as a researcher and writer in scientific, technical and political topics for general audiences, contributing images and texts to artist books by Edward Burtynsky and Bill Burns as well as scientific papers. Powers teaches programs for digital publishing, illustration, animation and video through UrbanArts and Trinity Square Video in Toronto, and facilitates workshops on contributing to Wikipedia as part of the Art+Feminism edit-a-thons at the AGO and other arts organizations. She is a recipient of numerous grants for her new media work, and was a finalist for the 2016 K.M. Hunter Artist Awards. Powers is a graduate of the CCA Kitakyushu Research Program (2009, Japan) and OCAD (2007, Toronto). She lives and works in Toronto.
